Could Your Team Spot an AI Written Phishing Email?

A phishing email used to be easier to catch. Bad grammar. Strange wording. A suspicious link that felt “off”. AI has changed that.

Today, cybercriminals can create emails that sound polished, personal, and believable. They can copy the tone of a supplier, imitate a manager’s writing style, and remove the obvious mistakes that employees were trained to spot.

That means the real question is no longer, “Does this email look fake?”

It is, “Would your team pause before clicking?”

AI-made phishing can look clean, calm, and convincing.

AI makes phishing harder to recognise

AI does not need to be a hacker to be dangerous. It only needs to help attackers write better.

With the right prompts, criminals can produce emails that are:

  • Clear and professional

  • Free from spelling mistakes

  • Written in local business language

  • Personalised with names, roles, or recent activity

  • Designed to create urgency without sounding suspicious

A fake invoice request can now sound like a normal supplier follow-up. A password reset email can look calm and routine. A message from “management” can feel familiar enough to lower someone’s guard.

That is why AI written phishing email attacks are becoming a bigger concern for businesses.

The old warning signs are not enough

Many teams were taught to look for poor grammar, odd formatting, or strange greetings. Those signs still matter, but they are no longer enough.

Modern phishing often targets behaviour, not just inboxes.

The email may ask someone to:

  • Open a shared document

  • Approve a payment

  • Scan a QR code

  • Update login details

  • Reply with sensitive information

  • Download an attachment

The danger is not always in the wording. It is in the request.

What your team should check before trusting an email

A strong defence starts with simple habits.

Before clicking, replying, or approving, employees should ask:

Was I expecting this message? If not, slow down.

Is the request urgent or unusual? Pressure is a common tactic.

Does the sender address fully match? Look beyond the display name.

Is there another way to confirm it? Use a known phone number or separate channel.

Does the link go where it claims? Hover before clicking, but do not rely on this alone.

Your inbox is now a frontline

AI is making cybercriminals smarter, but businesses are not helpless. The best protection combines employee awareness, email security controls, safe approval processes, and regular phishing simulations.
